Physiological Traits

  • Low body temperature: A Yukionna’s body temperature is much lower than that of a warm blooded creature, typically below the freezing point of water. This is due to their psychic energy draining heat from the physical plane to maintain their form. Despite this, Yukionna cannot handle higher (temperate or tropical) temperatures that are considered comfortable for most species as constantly absorbing so much heat could break the bonds of their bodies and destabilize their physical forms. Thus they can only live in colder areas.
  • Weather Manipulation: The endothermic reactions Yukionna cause in the air to sustain themselves can also alter the weather to become snowy wherever they go. Shelter they reside inside of will always covered in snow, even if the surrounding climate is temperate and warm.

Biomagical Attributes

  • Supernatural Beauty: Yukionna can manipulate their physical forms so that they are always, and under any circumstances, physically, personally and socially perfect, graceful and flawless, without anything that would make them look unattractive or distract from their presence.
  • Cryokinesis: Yukionna can create, shape and manipulate ice as well natural forms of snow, hail, icicles, ice spikes and candles, glaciers, pack ice, frost, polar ice caps, and cold by reducing the kinetic energy of atoms and thus making things colder, for various effects and combinations. The more of their psychic energy used, the more dramatic the effects they can make.

General Diet

Yukionna sustain themselves by draining the ambient heat in the air or from warm bodies, resulting in the cold spots around them. They can however, use their physical forms to consume other material food if they desire however.

As they are a female only species, they require males of another species (typically humanoids) to breed and promote genetic diversity. The females will be the same species as their mother but may acquire a few abilities from their father. The rare males born of a Yukionna will be their father’s species but will often be recorded to have a higher than average resistance to cold temperatures.

Lifespan and Growth

Yukionna are typically born in the late Autumn as an ethereal spirit, where the baby will instinctively drain heat from the physical plane to construct a fleshy ectoplasmic body akin to a human baby girl. The Yukionna child will grow at the same pace as a human up until their mid-twenties were their bodies will physically stop aging, likely to retain their beauty for ages.

Snowy mountains, Tundra, Taiga

Yukionna are nature spirits that began their existence in the high altitude snowy mountains. A lot of incidents involve them keeping their women from being stolen by invaders, resulting in them being avoided by civilizations for the most part. For years they were mostly unnoticed by any empires, only bringing home males lost in the mountains for mating purposes and otherwise kept to themselves.   During the expansion of the Yokai Empire, they were met by their various forces. Having a tough time to defeat them in their home territory, the yokai made an agreement with the race in that if they provided yokai soldiers in the mountains with a resting place, food, and medical attention, then the soldiers would also serve as their mates while they were there. With the male yokai quartering in their mountain stations, generations of Yukionna women grew up with aspects of the yokai culture to the point it became part of their identity. Even after the empire fell, Yukionna retained the overall yokai culture although with their own unique cultural traditions.

Normally Yukionna simply use their innate magic to create simple shelters from ice. More complex architecture made from packed snow and ice, but molded after Yokai architecture, with its signature slightly curved and titled roofs. In places with a lot of tourism, Yukionna will often construct ice hotels, temporary places promoted for adventurous travelers who are interested in novelties and unusual environments. The walls, fixtures, and fittings are made entirely of ice or compacted snow, and are held together using a substance known as snice, which takes the place of mortar in a traditional brick-built hotel.

There are also a few traditional log cabin Yokai houses left behind from when other races constructed them in their lands.

Yukionna adopted the spiritual rituals and beliefs of the Yokai culture. Being spirits themselves, they don’t worship them show much as see them as equals. Even so, many of their rituals are, like traditional Yokai, focused on purity. Impurity in Youkai refers to anything which separates them from musubi, the creative and harmonizing power. The things which make them impure are tsumi – pollution or sin which can be physical, moral or spiritual. Badness, impurity or sin are things that come later in life, and that can usually be got rid of by simple cleansing or purifying rituals.

Yukionna were originally much of the loner types, caring for their children in isolation until they were old enough to find their own places or take over once their mother passed. Eventually Yukionna began to come together in groups to support each other and developed social settlements and cultural exchange.

As a race within the yokai cultural sphere, traditionally Yukionna they wear kimono, especially in white. Other times they may wear yukatas of blue and purple shades. Some may prefer to simply be nude as they would not suffer damage from the cold due to the nature of their manifestation. A few subcultures have taken to wear wintery fashion clothes like down jackets and parkas or even light casual clothes from other species due to aesthetic fascination.

Yukionna girls are traditionally taught by their mothers at home, with fathers often going their separate ways or some yukionna chasing them off or disposing of them after the birth of the child. Children will most often play winter type activities in snow such as building forts and people from them, as well making snow angels and the like. Sled racing with or without animals is a popular traditional sport as is ice skating leading to the creation of recreational ice rinks. When hockey and surfing was introduced by cultural exchange, yukionna developed their own takes resulting in the creation of ice hockey and snowboarding.

Magic Use

With Yukionna having relatively strong elemental powers, that mainly focus on this arcanist ability as opposed to learning spellcraft or using magictech.

Science and Technology

As spirits, Yukionna can simply fly from place to place.

Due to their arcanist abilities, Yukionna have very little manufactured weapons although a few may craft simple melee weapons using this inherent magic.

Coming from a loner culture, most use a means of communication created by other races.

Medical Treatment

Yukionna are often taught a variety of medical treatments due to them passing down the techniques from generations that used to treat yokai soldiers.

Again most Yukionna don’t do much handiwork thanks to their versatile arcanist abilities, the most physical building done by these spirits involve building shelters from ice or surrounding materials in warmer altitudes for mates or guests.

Author’s Notes

Yukionna are part of when Japanese supernatural beings, Yokai were a majority of the Arcane Realm creatures. Originally I had them made of ice but felt that would just make them elementals, and i wanted them to be a distinct race of spirits.
